[SEMU-YÉOL LECTURE] October 2019

Gender, Family, and the Changing Korean Kitchen

Lecturer: Jennifer Flinn

Council member of the Royal Asiatic Society

Korean food has undergone incredible change over the past few decades, extending its own influence globally while incorporating new foods and traditions from around the globe. Alongside these changes to diet, so too has the Korean society, including new ideas about gender and who should have access to food knowledge and be responsible for food preparation.  By looking how gender and food are shown in Korean media, particularly instructional media like cookbooks and TV shows, the lecture will examine important changes in contemporary Korean society and culture.  It will also look at how changes in Korea’s built environment have interacted with social and economic change to create new spaces for people to engage with food and for shifts in gendered ideas about who belongs in the kitchen.

Jennifer Flinn works for KyungHee University’s Division of International Student and Scholar Support Services, as well as lecturing in anthropology and English.  She is also a council member of the Royal Asiatic Society, Korea Branch.
