YÉOL Bukchonga
Exhibition of Hanbok from the Tongyeong Song Byeong Mun Family Collection
The donor of this collection has preserved the hanbok of her family for decades, acting as the keeper of her family’s memories.
We are truly grateful for her efforts to protect these records and history, and for donating the collection to YÉOL.
The donation is even more meaningful in this day and age, when everything is easily disposed and forgotten.
We at YÉOL promise to study and exhibit the gift with exceptional care.
The donated artifacts are a perfect example of the practicality and simple beauty of our ancestors’ clothing culture.
They are the embodiment of sophistication, in which splendor shines through from the inside, as if to show the value of things that are not apparent from the outside.
Because of how meticulously they have been preserved, the artifacts allow us to follow the life stories of Song Byeong Mun and the members of his family.
The modern hanbok are especially remarkable in that they were everyday garments which were unpretentious yet elegant.
We, in turn, have attempted to recreate the fabrics, which have long been out of production, in their full beauty.
The recreated garments are modern, but also incorporate traditional patterns from the past.
Through this process of reinterpreting hanbok, we seek to keep the tradition alive.
Hanbok is an important cultural asset that brings together the wisdom, customs, and spirit of the Korean people.
Our ultimate goal in planning this exhibition was to pass down its true beauty and value to future generations.
We hope this exhibition will be a step in the way to rediscover the hanbok’s potential for modernization as well as to continue the tradition.
Last but not least, We hope it will tell the heartfelt story of a family and transport you back to their time.
