YÉOL 20th Anniversary : Craft of Cure and Comfort
For the past 20 years, YÉOL has endeavored to cultivate the beauty of our culture by supporting the artisans who keep our traditional crafts alive. Now, through the exhibition “The Craft of Cure and Comfort,” we aim to look back upon the fruits of our labor to conserve the values of our cultural traditions. Displaying once more the works of eighteen artisans who have collaborated with YÉOL over the years, we seek to examine the value of healing that crafts can provide in our hectic urban life. With this in mind, we have created a space for contemplating the potential and the future of craftwork, as well as YÉOL’s role in it.
The structural
reorganizations caused by advances in technology have to date been mainly
centered around urban environments, sacrificing again and again the aesthetic
values accumulated in our living environments. Amid an urbanity whose
asymmetrical development has targeted technological and economical growth to
the exclusion of many values, the YÉOL Foundation has spent the last 20 years standing firm
in its mission to promote and sponsor the cultural aspects we have let slip
through our fingers through the medium of craftwork, nurturing a collective
pride in our culture.
These works, displayed in a new “urban core” space created from the shapes and materials that compose the city, are the traces left behind by the artisans who have joined hands with YÉOL in the safeguarding of our cultural traditions. Their masterpieces embody the artisans’ tireless efforts to study the values of traditional crafts with the respect they deserve, and to create a sustainable craftwork that shapes the new traditions of the future. In their juxtaposition, these works forge new interactive connections and reveal the intricate aesthetic values inherent to their creation. We hope that this exhibition will provide its visitors with the opportunity to retrace YÉOL’s endeavors in the sphere of craftwork over the past 20 years, as well as to rest and reflect upon the sensitive values forgotten in the rush of urban life.
