Stop Talking Reunification, Start Talking Reality

Under the Park Geun-hye administration, there has been much talk in South Korea about reunification. Seoul-based reporter and author Andrew Salmon argues that there has been little actionafter seven decades of division and there is no process underway to achieve it. Meanwhile, many commentators, particularly in the American right wing, are convinced that North Korea will, sooner or later, "collapse." In this lecture, he will discuss why it is far from inevitable that dictators will fall or their regimes "collapse," and the many positive "bottom-up" changes that are currently taking place in North Korea which so many people mistakenly believe is frozen in a Cold War time warp. Some of the points that will be raised arewhat the implications of these two separate strands are;

ο why we need to set aside wishful thinking and be pragmatic; and

ο​ why the preferred South Korean model of German reunification may be the wrong benchmark for the peninsula.

Andrew Salmon is reporter, broadcaster and author. He is the Seoul correspondent for France24's English news service and covers the Koreas for the Daily Telegraph, Forbes, Nikkei Asian Review and the South China Morning Post. He is also a columnist for The Korea Times. His five books on Korea cover Korean dining; foreign business in Korea; the Korean War. His "To the Last Round: The Epic British Stand on the Imjin River, Korea, 1950" was named "Best Military Book of the Year" in the UK in 2009; was awarded a "Korean Wave" award at the National Assembly in Seoul; and was named one of the Top Ten Books on Korea" by the Wall St Journal in 2010. His latest book is 2014's "Modern Korea: All That Matters." He has visited North Korea four times and in 2015, presented two hour-long documentaries on the economic changes underway in North Korea for broadcaster KBS1.
