Challenging Authenticity and Integrity: Three Cases of Historic Houses and Human-caused Disasters in Seoul
(Trilogy of Relocation, Intervention and Adaptive reuse with a focus on the Residence of Han Gyu Seol)

In the last two years, Cho had the opportunity to present three case studies of Seoul’s historic houses on the verge of demolition due to South Korea’s rapid and dramatic urbanization. Originally located in central Seoul, the houses were dismantled, reassembled and relocated or completely destroyed. The research of these houses was submitted to many international journals and presented at various international scientific symposiums: the first part of the trilogy, a case study of the residence of Han Gyu Seol, was presented at the 50th year anniversary of the ICOMOS Scientific Symposium in Warsaw, June 2015; the second, a case study of the YI Seung Eop House, was presented at the ICOMOS Administration Committee Scientific Symposium in Fukuoka, October 2015; and the third, a case study of Shinmungwan and Joseon-Gwangmunhoe, was presented at the ICOMOS Administration Committee Scientific Symposium in Istanbul, October 2016. Through an examination of these three case studies, this lecture will provide you with an opportunity to think about relocation, intervention and adaptive reuses of historical houses.
Cho In Souk is the founder and principal of DaaRee Architect & Associates since 1986. She studied her Ph.D in architectural history specializing in Historic Conservation and Restoration at GS Sungkyunkwan University. She has engaged in the projects of heritage architecture designs in many countries including Korea, China, Singapore, Bangladesh and Ethiopia. Since 2014, Cho serves as the vice-president of International Scientific Committee on the Analysis and Restoration of Structures of Architectural Heritage (ISCARSAH – ICOMOS).
