[SEMU-YÉOL LECTURE]
Korean Buddhism in the World: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow
Lecturer: Bernard Senécal
Professor, Sogang University
An
overall introduction to Korean Buddhism, the lecture will answer to a number of
basic questions. What are the main events and actors of its history? How many
sects does it reckon today and what defines them? How does it relate to the other
religious traditions of Korea: Shamanism, Confucianism, Wŏn Buddhism, Christianity,
etc.? How does it relate to politics? Is Buddhism still extant in North Korea,
and if so how? What kind of meditation technique does South Korean Buddhism
teach, and what are their strong and weak points? In a word, what are the
characteristics that distinguish Buddhism in South Korea from Buddhism in other
parts of East Asia and the rest of the world? In order to allow the members of
the audience unfamiliar with Buddhism the follow the lecture without difficulty,
the lecture will begin with a brief reminder of what Buddhism, i.e. the
religion of Awakening or Enlightenment, is all about. A reasonable amount of
time will be dedicated to answering the questions of the audience.
